Solar Floodlights for Parking Lots, Warehouses, and Open Areas: When Is the Best Time to Use Them?
Solar floodlights are ideal for large areas that require diffused lighting. Learn when floodlights are more effective than streetlights.
Solar floodlights are used when the area to be illuminated is larger and does not follow a linear path, such as a road. Examples include parking lots, warehouse yards, small fields, project gates, security areas, and outdoor work sites. Compared to streetlights, floodlights offer greater flexibility in the direction of the light beam.
When should you choose a solar-powered floodlight?
Choose spotlights if the goal is to illuminate a specific area: an entrance, the side of a building, a loading/unloading area, or a yard. For long roads, solar street lights are usually more appropriate because the light distribution follows the direction of the road. For mixed-use areas, both types of lights can be used together.
Technical considerations to keep in mind
- Installation angle: Aim the light so that it does not blind drivers or security guards.
- Elevation: The higher the position of the light, the wider the light spread, but the intensity on the ground decreases.
- Panel: Make sure the panel gets direct sunlight, especially if the light is mounted near a wall.
- Sensor mode: Motion detection is suitable for security areas, while stable mode is suitable for routine operations.
IP65/IP67 for outdoor areas
Because floodlights are often installed in open areas, protection against water and dust is essential. Mayor Wolf products meet IP65/IP67 standards depending on the product category. IP65 is generally sufficient for outdoor rain and dust, while IP67 provides a higher level of protection for more demanding conditions.
Avoiding the wrong purchase
Don’t just look at product photos. Provide the dimensions of the area, installation points, the height of the wall or pole, and the required operating hours. If the parking area has multiple zones, it’s better to use several moderate-intensity light sources rather than a single very bright light that creates sharp shadows.
