The Difference Between IP65 and IP67 in Outdoor Solar Lights
IP65 and IP67 are frequently listed in solar light specifications. Understand what they mean so you don’t choose the wrong product for outdoor use.
The IP rating indicates a device’s level of protection against dust and water. For outdoor solar lights, IP65 and IP67 are the two most commonly used standards. Both are suitable for outdoor use, but their levels of protection differ.
What does the IP number mean?
The first number indicates protection against solid objects such as dust. The second number indicates protection against water. For IP65 and IP67, the number 6 means the device has excellent protection against dust. The difference lies in the second number.
- IP65: Protected from water spray from various directions; suitable for normal outdoor rain and dust.
- IP67: It offers a higher level of water protection, making it suitable for more demanding conditions and situations where temporary flooding may occur.
Is IP67 always better?
IP67 offers a higher level of protection, but the choice should still be based on specific needs. For roads, parks, and typical commercial areas, IP65 is often sufficient if the product is well-designed and installed correctly. For locations with extreme rainfall, a risk of heavy splashing, or heavy-duty project sites, IP67 may be a safer option.
The IP rating isn't the only factor
A light fixture’s durability isn’t determined solely by its IP rating. The body material, seal quality, wiring design, heat dissipation, and installation process also play a role. Even a light fixture with a good IP rating can still have issues if the panel is installed in a shaded area or if the wiring isn’t properly secured.
